guide:
This is a brief overview of how I work best, a quick synopsis of areas I excel in but also those I am challenged by. This is not an exhaustive list but hopefully a guide that helps you better understand a little bit more about me.
Professionally, I’ve been in the sportswear industry for 12 years (c.2013) and in that time I’ve learned a lot about business as well how a creative designer fits into that. I love the challenge of having to learn something in order to succeed at it.
What I like
- I like learning new things especially as it relates to creative roles (i.e. skills, tech, trends).
- I start with sketching, usually hand-drawn to get ideas out of my head.
- I obsess over small details that make whatever I am working on a more compelling story.
- I spend time researching my own ideas to validate their place in the design process.
- Asking “why” will always be how I start to understand a project.
- I am inspired by nature, patterns, and designs found in the natural world. This directly influeces my creativity.
Strengths
- Collaborating with others, both designers and cross-functional teams.
- Process-oriented.
- Creative exploration.
- Defining a narrative and telling a compelling visual story.
- Craftsmanship - attention to detail and the execution of work.
- Well-rounded artistic skillset: drawing, painting, fine art, photography.
- Strategic thinking.
- Creative direction and visual design.
- Consideration of margins and cost constraints.
Weaknesses
- I value transparent critque and this can sometimes be taken the wrong way. I am working empathize more when giving feedback.
- I can sometimes think too “big picture” or daydream about how a project could grow beyond the brief.
How to communicate with me
- Email works well. I also prefer apps like Asana that help delineate tasks.
- Conversations face-to-face (even if that means Zoom).
- Reoccurring meetings help me balance my calendar and prioritize conversations.
- I really appreciate grabbing a coffee to chat where the conversation can drift naturally between personal life and professional topics.
Low patience for
- Corporate jargon, please just be specific.
- Unwillingness to try something different.
- Messy files when handing off to someone else (layers, naming conventions, folder structure, etc)
- Vague briefs or ones that contain too much design direction.
Give me feedback
- I prefer it more immediately.
- I would rather hear an honest critique than hollow praise.
- I am open-minded and appreciate the opportunity to improve.
