guide:
This is a brief overview of how I work best, a quick synopsis of areas (I think) I excel in but also those I am challenged by. By no means is this an exhaustive list but hopefully a guide that helps you better understand a little bit more about me.
Professionally, I’ve been in the sportswear industry for 11 years (c.2013) and in that time I’ve learned a lot about business as well how a creative designer fits into that. I love the challenge of having to learn something in order to succeed at it (I’m an Enneagram 3).
What I like
- I like learning new things especially as it relates to creative roles (i.e. skills, tech, trends).
- I start with sketching, usually hand-drawn to get ideas out of my head.
- I obsess over small details that make whatever I am working on a more compelling story.
- I need to spend time researching my own ideas to validate their place in the design process.
- Asking “why” will always be how I start to understand a project.
- I am inspired by nature, patterns and designs found in the natural world. This directly influeces my creativity.
- I prefer to design under shorter deadlines. It allows me to get into a hyper-focused state of getting something done and maximizing my attention on a specific task.
Strengths
- Process-oriented and creative exploration.
- Defining a project narrative and telling a compelling visual story.
- Craftsmanship - attention to detail and the execution of work.
- Well-rounded artistic skillset: drawing, painting, fine art, photography.
- Thinking strategically about how a problem could be solved.
- Creative direction and visual design
Weaknesses
- I value honesty and sometimes that comes across more brash and forward than I would like when providing feedback on someone else’s work.
- I can sometimes think too “big picture” or daydream about how a project could grow into an inspiring upwards spiral but then miss the immediate deliverables needed to get the project done.
- Delagating can hang me up and at times will try to shoulder a bulk of the work rather than looping in others on my team to help accomplish tasks.
How to communicate with me
- Email actually works pretty well. I also prefer apps like Asana that help delineate tasks.
- Conversations face-to-face (even if that means Zoom).
- Reoccurring meetings help me balance my calendar and prioritize conversations.
- I really appreciate grabbing a coffee to chat where the conversation can drifting naturally between personal life and professional topics.
Low patience for
- Corporate jargon, please just be specific.
- Unwillingness to try something different.
- Messy files when handing off to someone else (layers, naming conventions, folder structure, etc)
- Vague briefs or ones that contain too much design direction (are you designing it or asking me to?)
Things I struggle with
- Priortizing conversations. Sometimes I can get buried in the work in a creative way that prevents me from looking up to have a quick check-in along the way.
- Sometimes I try do everything on my own.
- Procrastinating on certain aspects of a project and using others as an excuse to validate still “accomplishing” something – the idea of cleaning the house while you know there are other more pressing things to get done.
Give me feedback
- I prefer it more immediately than in retrospect to completing a task.
- I would rather hear an honest critique than hollow praise.
- I am open-minded and appreciate the opportunity to improve.
Conditions I prefer for work
- Flexibility, whether that is what hours in a day I work, where I work, and how I am able to balance life.
- My most creative hours are first thing in the morning. Afternoons are best for meetings.
- I can work from anywhere and sometimes an office is the last place on that list. Coffee shops, airports, my home studio, and especially my VW van. I can usually find a very productive rhythm in these places more so than at a desk.
