creative process

I like cutting up paper images and piecing them back together in unexpected but highly considered ways.
I’m not entirely sure when this really became a part of my process, but I’ve always had sketchbooks that in some select pages have lent their blank canvases to this creative exercise.

These collages shown below don’t follow much rhyme or reason. I think that could be said for most collages, but occasionally I will make one or a series with a specific intent. A good example of this would be the privacy envelop series of two that I did for a close friend. Those were thematically considered and so sometimes I guess I break my own rules.

Generally for me to make a collage is to take a step back and take a breath. To make something with no clear direction from the beginning. Allowing this creative process to unfold as I go is where the enjoyment and revitalization for my creativity thrives. These aren’t created with an objective in mind,  they are meant to inspire, challenge, and grown my own creative perspectives above all else. This again is at the foundation of what graphic design is. The aesthetic assembly of visual information for the sake of sharing a new idea in a compelling way.
